Trellis Programme

Delivered by UCL and UCL East

In 2022, the Foundation for Future London awarded a grant to UCL for its project “Trellis” to develop, deliver, and sustain meaningful opportunities for knowledge exchange between researchers and East London artists and communities through our Capital Grant Scheme.

The Capital Grant Scheme is part of our Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, funded by Westfield Stratford City.

About the project

The Trellis programme began in 2018, bringing together artists, researchers and local east London communities. Using our experience and skills in arts commissioning, we add value by creating a structure in which we provide ongoing support and networks to participants.

We support them to build and sustain legacy and impact, something often missing from a more traditional commissioning approach. We have provided opportunities for over a hundred artists and as many researchers to participate over the last four years. Hundreds of local community individuals and organisations have participated through the programme which has so far delivered 15 art commissions in three free east London based exhibitions.

Our next stage of development, funded by Foundation for Future London will continue in the way we have started with a rooted, authentic, programme of activity that supports east London’s people, businesses, and communities to thrive through working with the unique strengths of UCL.

Trellis will develop, deliver, and sustain meaningful opportunities for knowledge exchange between researchers and east London artists and communities.

Trellis will be a unique programme in the depth and breadth of its impact in east London.

Trellis will become the gold standard for art programming bringing together university expertise with local communities.

Trellis will become known as an exceptional art commissioning programme and will draw in additional support and participation from other key stakeholders in east London (including funders and East Bank partners).

Trellis will create an active network of east London based artists; building their resilience and supporting their success.

Trellis will become seen as a place which supports and champions those from under-represented communities and makes space for voices less often heard.
