East London

Shaped by people, driven by art and innovation, there is more to East London than meets the eye. Food, culture, design, art, fashion, innovation, languages and abundant creative industry, linked with a rich and fascinating heritage make up the vibrant boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

Hackney, population 279,700.

Known for its street markets, graffiti, nightlife, and artist community, the area is also known for its green spaces including Hackney Marshes, 1,300 listed buildings, and 29 conservation zones including Clapton Common and Clissold Park.

Newham, population 363,552.

Newham is one of the most diverse boroughs in the country, with 70% residents from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. Over 104 languages are spoken. The borough is also home to London City Airport and Westfield Stratford City.

Tower Hamlets, population 317,705.

A young population with an established British Bangladeshi community, it is known as the heart of the East End with the Tower of London and Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf and Idea Store on its doorstep.

Waltham Forest, population 276,700.

It is the birthplace of Alfred Hitchcock, David Beckham and William Morris, one of the founders of the British Arts and Crafts movement. In 2019, Waltham Forest was host to the Mayor’s first London Borough of Culture, to great effect.
