Hear My Voice

Delivered by Pinny Grylls

In 2021, the Foundation for Future London is supporting “Hear My Voice” project by Hackney resident and filmmaker Pinny Grylls through our Small Grant Scheme.

This scheme is part of our new Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, funded by Westfield Stratford City.

“Hear My Voice” is a feature film that tells the story of a British Congolese choir boy growing up in Hackney who dreams of becoming an opera singer, made in collaboration with the young people the story is about.

About the project

‘Hear My Voice’ is a feature film that tells the story of a British Congolese choir boy growing up in Hackney who dreams of becoming an opera singer.

The film’s story features Opera, Congolese Rumba and Grime – we are looking to remix these musical genres to create a vibe that is authentically East London. To create this sound, we are looking for a group of eight musically gifted local young people over eight sessions to compose, mix and record these tracks.

‘Hear My Voice’ is made in collaboration with the young people the story is about. In 2020 we successfully raised £20k through Kickstarter to fund the development of the script in collaboration with young people at Intermission Youth. It is our dream that we also collaborate with local young people to create the music for the film with this funding.

The young co-writers of the film have already done a series of opera workshops led by musician Aga Serugo Lugo on behalf of the Royal Opera House. Aga has a very strong track record of co-creating music with young people across musical genres and is a talented composer. We would like to ask him to come back and work with local young people to explore the diversity of musical genres enjoyed in East London and create a unique set of signature songs for the film. We will also hire a professional music producer to help them record the tracks. For the young people this will be more than work experience, it will be a paid opportunity to work on a real life feature film project with professionals in the industry.

Help Here My Voice to create the musical landscape of the film. They are looking for 8 East London musical talents. Over the summer they will organise workshops led by songwriter and composer Aga Serugo Lugo.

Hear My Voice tells the story of super star choir boy TJ who dreams of being an opera singer, only to find himself back in the hood being stopped and searched.
