Moving Together: Strengthening Community Wellbeing Through Cycling, Skating, and Cultural Events

Delivered by Skate Gals & Pals CIC and Broad Bikez CIC

In 2025, Foundation for Future London awarded a grant to Skate Gals & Pals CIC and Broad Bikez CIC through our COLLABORATE: SAFER SPACES commission. The project is supported by the Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, jointly funded by Westfield Stratford City and Foundation for Future London.

Skate Gals & Pals CIC and Broad Bikez CIC are working together to strengthen community wellbeing and social inclusion through active travel, creative learning and safer shared spaces in East London.

The Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund is an award-winning, five-year programme investing £10 million into communities across Newham, Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Waltham Forest. By placing funding, resources and decision-making power directly into local hands, the programme has supported and catalysed the lives and creative journeys of more than 19,000 people across East London.

The commission builds directly on Foundation for Future London’s Empowering Safer Spaces campaign, which centred the voices of young people and under-resourced, marginalised communities to shape a shared understanding of what Safer Spaces mean across East London.

About the project

Skate Gals & Pals CIC and Broad Bikez CIC are working together to strengthen community wellbeing and social inclusion through active travel, creative learning and safer shared spaces in East London.

Together, they are developing a shared, multi-purpose community venue that will serve as a hub for cycling and skating workshops, creative training, community events and inclusive wellbeing activities. The space will bring together their communities under one roof – offering free and low-cost skate and bike repair sessions, employability and coaching programmes, cultural events and accessible social meetups.

The shared hub will:

  • Offer weekly skate and cycle sessions for women, LGBTQIA+ and BPOC residents across East London.
  • Deliver training and qualifications in coaching, bike mechanics and event management.
  • Host community events and skill-sharing sessions such as zine-making, repair socials and wellbeing workshops.
  • Provide affordable workspace for local creatives, coaches and mechanics to build sustainable careers.
  • Act as a local connector, linking residents to opportunities in the creative, active travel and wellbeing sectors.

By transforming disused or underused urban spaces into safe, accessible and community-owned environments, Skate Gals & Pals CIC and Broad Bikez CIC are co-creating a sustainable model for grassroots-led regeneration, supporting Londoners to move, connect and thrive.
