Delivered by Women of the Wick
In 2022, the Foundation for Future London has awarded a grant to Women of the Wick for its project “WOWZINE – Storytelling for Women & Non-binary Entrepreneurs” for women in Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham through our Small Grant Scheme.
WOWZINE is a storytelling programme and a print publication for local creatives to share their experiences on entrepreneurship, art, spirituality, urbanism, mental health and sexuality, run by local feminist media platform Women of the Wick.
The Small Grant Scheme is part of our new Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, funded by Westfield Stratford City.
The project meets three of our scheme’s key themes, Employment Opportunities, Learning Opportunities and Business and Entrepreneur Support.
WOWZINE is a storytelling programme and a print publication for local creatives to share their experiences on entrepreneurship, art, spirituality, urbanism, mental health and sexuality, run by local feminist media platform Women of the Wick. The zine and the storytelling workshops bring together a diverse group of women and non-binary people across Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham elevating new writing, storytelling, and editing skills. The contributors won’t need previous experience in creative writing or journalism.
The storytelling workshops will culminate in a print issue in September 2022. The zine is focused on auto fictional and first-person stories, including short essays, opinions, poetry and creative writing, highlighting lived experiences and personal stories. Our mission is to create a sense of belonging and show that as creatives, our experiences are multifaceted, meaningful and valid.
Women of the Wick was founded in 2019 by local artist and writer Sara Kärpänen. WOWZINE is an organic continuation to Women of the Wick’s two podcast series How to Occupy Space and Girl Get A Real Job. These podcast series stem from the need to elevate diverse stories from women and non-binary people from the creative community in East London and normalise conversations around earning, living and working as an artist.
