Opening Doors to the Fashion Industry

Delivered by British Bangladeshi Fashion Council

In 2022, the Foundation for Future London has awarded a grant to British Bangladeshi Fashion Council for its project “Opening Doors to the Fashion Industry” for South Asian women in Tower Hamlets through our Medium Grant Scheme.

The project will deliver a training programme that educates 30 BAME women about the fashion industry and then takes 12 on an intensive course to identify, develop and nurture their passion and practical skills for the fashion industry – focusing on sustainable fashion approaches, including the use of recycled materials.

The Medium Grant Scheme is part of our Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, funded by Westfield Stratford City.

About the project

Our project will deliver a training programme that educates 30 BAME women about the fashion industry and then takes 12 on an intensive course to identify, develop and nurture their passion and practical skills for the fashion industry – focusing on sustainable fashion approaches, including the use of recycled materials.

These 12 BAME women will undertake 2 days a week practical training for 16 weeks; exploring the fashion industry through a tailored programme of practical learning about the design process, sourcing materials, manufacturing, marketing and more. Each participant will design and make one outfit of their choice to learn about the end-to-end process and, at the end of the course, they will display and market their outfit at an exhibition.

This practical programme will give these women the confidence, skills, knowledge they need to take their first steps into to the fashion industry. Those interested will then be supported to set-up a textiles and tailoring co-operative, to service the needs of the local and wider community, as there is a big gap in the market, especially in the Asian fashion sector. All will be provided with marketing training, so that should they seek to go down the self-employment route, they are able to carry out basic marketing by setting up a website and social media.
