LSA x Building Culture EPQ Programme

Delivered by The London School of Architecture and Building Culture

In 2023, the Foundation for Future London has awarded a grant to London School of Architecture and Building Culture for its project “LSA x Building Culture EPQ Programme” to launch the first EPQ programme dedicated to architecture and urban design in the UK, which aims to widen access and participation in the built environment for sixth form students in Hackney and Tower Hamlets through our Large Grant Scheme.

The Large Grant Scheme is art of our Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, funded by Westfield Stratford City.

About the project

The London School of Architecture has partnered with Building Culture to develop the first Extended Project Qualification programme dedicated to architecture and urban design in the country. The course structure will involve 15 hours of a core classes about sustainability, construction and heritage developed by the LSA, a series of group walks and workshops around Hackney and Tower Hamlets to engage learners in their locality, encouraging them to respond to local issues of placemaking, and individually mentored supervisions to develop their own artefact.

Once the artefact has been produced, students put together presentations with help from their tutors and are examined at an exam centre in London, where their work is exhibited.

After the examination, the work will be exhibited locally by the LSA and Building Culture so that the work can be shared with the participants, their families and friends, the local community and programme collaborators.

Participants will be able to develop creative and technical skills through rigorous workshops on drawing, surveying, materials, and specification, will have exposure to architectural practices in London, via the LSA’s Practice Network, and will get an insight into what an architectural degree might entail. The project will also expose students to circular thinking and sustainable building practices. By introducing prospective architecture students to these themes early on, we hope to nurture a new generation of socially and environmentally conscious designers and citizens.
