Jerk & Juice Saturday Club

Delivered by Jerk & Juice Catering Ltd

In 2022, the Foundation for Future London has awarded a grant to Jerk & Juice Catering for its project “Jerk & Juice Saturday Club” for young people in Waltham Forest through our Small Grant Scheme. The project meets three of our scheme’s key themes, Young People, Learning Opportunities and Employment Opportunities.

The Small Grant Scheme is part of our new Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, funded by Westfield Stratford City.

Over 10 months, the Jerk & Juice Saturday Club will work with ‘at-risk’ youth to develop transferable cooking and employability skills, while celebrating our diverse East London communities’ culture and heritage.

About the project

The Jerk and Juice Saturday Club will work with 15 at-risk youths from Waltham Forest. Embarking on a weekly Afro-Caribbean cooking course, they’ll receive mentoring and accredited training while developing transferable life and employability skills.

We want to run a creative cultural cooking, skills building and mentoring programme for 15, 13–16-year-olds identified as being at risk of offending. We’ll deliver a combination of weekly
3-hour cooking workshops, peer group work focusing on accountability, employment skills and goal setting; and 1:1 mentoring from our respected volunteer team headed up by Philip Quicksilver Bowes, Leytonstone’s own Former Lightweight Boxing Commonwealth Champion.

Over the weeks, beneficiaries will cook tasty Afro-Caribbean food that they can take home for their families to enjoy while developing important life skills and tools for success. They’ll learn
about the Caribbean and African culture and heritage, and the importance of healthy eating. They’ll learn how to bake their own bread, juices, also about the importance of vitamins and minerals and what the body needs to survive.

There will be skills building challenges, e.g., the ‘fiver’ challenge giving them the option of how to spend £5. Will they spend it on burger and chips, or would they like to be shown how far the money could stretch when cooking raw ingredients? They’ll each complete three accredited certificates: Level 2 Health & Safety, Level 2 Customer Services, Level 2 Food Safety, in addition
to our Jerk & Juice Certificate of Achievement.

Achieving accredited certificates and developing essential employee skills with us will increase the employability of participants in the long-term.
