Helping Artist Make Work, EAST

Delivered by Lexi Zelda Stevens

About the project

Coaching support for 25-28 artists and people working in the arts to help them navigate the challenges and impacts of the Covid-19 global pandemic on their work.

Each selected artist will receive a bursary to attend a course of five 75 minute coaching sessions from me – artist coach Lexi Zelda Stevens, in association with Civic State /Hackney Wick Underground.

Coach-mentoring is a simple conversation with the aim of reducing the mental load on the client in order to catalyse new ideas, move past emotional blocks and come up with new solutions. Each session is a structured conversation using questioning techniques and other diagnostic tools to get to grips with how the client wants or needs things to change. I help draw out the specifics, and assist the client in sorting them into goals and action steps. My role is to ask good questions and reflect back what I hear in an effective way. Coach-mentoring sessions can also include discussion and advice on stress and well-being, burnout, time and energy management, collaboration communication and relationships, partnership working, working with institutions, funders and galleries; marketing, fundraising, PR, profile raising and social media.

Open to professional artists and people working in culture & the arts (all artforms), who are outside of formal education living or working in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Newham or Waltham Forest. Particularly those facing significant financial challenges, either pre-existing or as a direct result of the pandemic. Selected artists are asked to contribute the first £15 of coaching costs if they can. Full Bursaries are available if this is not possible.

I am experienced in working with people who may face extra challenges due to their race, sexuality, socio-economic background and/or gender. I am also experienced in working with people who have specific access needs, including mental and physical health, and/or who consider themselves to have a disability.
