Working in Film

Delivered by Four Corners

In 2022, we supported film and photography charity Four Corners in Tower Hamlets with its project “Working in Film” through the second year of our Medium Grant Scheme as part of the Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund.

“Working in Film” will support 20 disadvantaged young adults living in Hackney and Tower Hamlets towards careers in the TV and film sectors.

About the project

“Working in Film” will support 20 disadvantaged young adults living in Hackney and Tower Hamlets towards careers in the TV and film sectors. The project will target young adults who are under-represented in the TV and film industries, and who are disadvantaged in their career paths.

“Working in Film” will begin with a three-week introductory course for ten participants aimed at people who currently lack the knowledge or confidence to consider working in creative media. We aim to support six people from this course onto a second, more intensive course, alongside ten additional people who have some previous experience.

The intensive nine-week course will offer practical skills training in small groups.  Each group will learn film development, camera, lighting, sound, production and Premiere Pro editing, culminating in the creation of short film projects, both individually and as a team.

All participants will also receive employability support, covering areas such as transition to work, freelance working, job roles, job search, CV development, interview techniques and networking, as well as masterclasses with speakers from the industry.

All participants will also be assigned an industry mentor of their choice, and will have one-to-one sessions where they will draw up individual action plans. Mentors will support participants with advice and opportunities on shadowing, employment and networking.

Finally, sustained pastoral support will be provided throughout by Four Corners’ Training Co-ordinator in areas such as: personal skills support; liaison with Jobcentre Plus East London’s disability employment advisors; and support for vulnerable participants, with access to specialist well-being support. This support culminates in Four Corners working with each participant to identify and approach companies and organisations in the film and TV industry which would provide an appropriate work placement.
