We award £1.7 million to “New Talent-Future Leaders” employment and training programme for young East Londoners

Foundation for Future London has awarded £1.7 million from its new Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund to “New Talent-Future Leaders”, a major programme whose aim is to create a high-quality talent pipeline and inclusive employment opportunities for East London’s diverse young workforce, specifically in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest.

It will provide major boost to East London’s young jobseekers, set against a context of wide-spread youth unemployment and the need for creative and cultural sector led recovery for London post-Covid-19, and as well as to local businesses and organisations who want to employ a talented and diverse workforce.

The “New Talent-Future Leaders” is a £3 million 5-year creative employment programme, led by a consortium of London’s major arts, cultural and education institutions — Sadler’s Wells, UCL East, UAL London College of Fashion, BBC and V&A East – who make up the new East Bank cultural district in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The consortium will work in partnership with children and youth charity A New Direction, who has been appointed by London Legacy Development Corporation to operate the Good Growth Hub.

The programme will be a key vehicle for delivering the Mayor of London’s skills and inclusive growth priorities, making sure all Londoners, regardless of background, can benefit. The programme will offer:
• apprenticeships, internships, and other employment, training, and skills development opportunities in the higher education sector and cultural, creative, fashion and technology industries.
• CPD programme for teachers in East London schools (East Education)

A strong component of the “New Talent-Future Leaders” programme is its commitment to inclusion, access and equity, co-design with young people and collaborative approach amongst local organisations. Employers will be able to benefit from increased diversity in the workplace as well as offering best practice standards in fair and inclusive employment, professional development and payment of the London Living Wage.

The Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund is a £10 million 5-year programme, supported by retail destination Westfield Stratford City and delivered by Foundation for Future London. The programme aims to transform and catalyse the lives and careers of people in East London by putting funding, resources and support straight into local people’s hands. The Fund will provide new jobs, learning, training and educational programmes through arts, culture, innovation, public realm and creative placemaking.

Working with the Good Growth Hub, the programme will support employers to open up opportunities in the cultural, creative, fashion and digital technology sectors. Initiatives such as the Shared Training and Employment Programme (STEP) and the Creative and Cultural Opportunities Programme (CCOP) will help tackle some of the barriers many local young people face when trying to access employment and training opportunities in these growing sectors.

Alyson Hodkinson, General Manager of Westfield Stratford City says:
“‘The New Talent-Future Leaders’ scheme is an exciting next strand of our partnership with Foundation for Future London. Nurturing upcoming talent is critical to supporting our local community, many of whom visit Westfield Stratford City each day. Investing in our upcoming leaders and supporting employment opportunities for East London’s diverse work force is key to futureproofing the creative environment of the East Bank, and forms an important part of our Better Places 2030 CSR strategy.”

Maria Adebowale-Schwarte, CEO, Foundation for Future London says:
“The ‘New Talent-Future Leaders’ programme will tap into the huge talent potential in East London younger demographics, creating space for young people’s creativity, energy, and passion to lead the way. We’re pleased to be supporting the next generation of diverse creative leaders and innovators, through the Foundation for Future for London’s partnership with Westfield Stratford City, setting a solid future for cultural industry to thrive in East London and beyond.”

Simon Cane, Executive Director, UCL Culture and Chair of the East Bank Partners Strategic Objectives Group says:
“The East Bank partners are creating direct benefits to the communities of East London and we have developed the ‘New Talent – Future Leaders’ to enable us to deliver on that commitment. The programme will help to realise and develop the potential of young people in East London through a range of initiatives that will create new opportunities for employment, training and education not only within the East Bank Partners but also in businesses and organisations in the local communities. We are grateful to Foundation for Future London, Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund and London Legacy Development Corporation for their support of this important, transformational programme.”
